300750: In Q3, the single-quarter gross margin fell to 20.69 — is it due to product mix or taxes and fees, and will it keep falling in Q4?
The 20.69% figure is correct, and both product mix and taxes and fees are genuinely at work, but these two hit different lines of the accounts — consumption tax squeezes the net margin and does not enter the gross margin; what actually drags the gross margin down is the export tax rebate and product mix, and the export tax rebate cut was already fully felt in Q2, so the further drop quarter-on-quarter in Q3 has no rebate component.
First, reconcile the numbers. Q3 single-quarter operating revenue was 1652.21 yi yuan, operating cost 1310.40 yi yuan (first three quarters 3416.95 yi yuan minus first half 2106.55 yi yuan), single-quarter gross profit 341.81 yi yuan, which divided by revenue gives 20.69%. One detail more striking than the gross margin: Q2 single-quarter gross profit was 342.17 yi yuan, and Q3 was only 0.36 yi yuan less, yet revenue rose 174.35 yi yuan quarter-on-quarter — the extra revenue brought almost no extra gross profit.
At the October 20 results briefing someone asked the same question, and board secretary Jiang Li's exact words were: "The change in product mix — a single quarter's product mix fluctuation does not represent the long-term direction"; "Second is the impact of consumption tax and the export tax rebate. We are actively communicating with customers to share the related impact together." So it is not either-or; the company itself acknowledges both.
The export tax rebate runs through cost. Ministry of Finance and State Taxation Administration Announcement No. 2 of 2026: the VAT export tax rebate rate for battery products drops from 9% to 6%, effective April 1, 2026 through the end of the year. A 3-point cut in the rebate rate means the difference between levied and rebated tax is transferred into operating cost. Roughly calculated on first-half overseas revenue of 871.29 yi yuan, 31.46% of revenue, 3% times 31.46% gives an upper limit of about 0.94 percentage points of impact on gross margin — an upper limit because overseas revenue includes local sales from overseas plants and is not all domestic exports. The key is timing: Q2 (April to June) already ran a full quarter at 6%, and the rate did not move again in Q3, so the nearly 2.5 percentage points of further quarter-on-quarter decline in Q3 cannot be booked to the rebate.
Consumption tax runs through taxes and surcharges and does not enter operating cost. Ministry of Finance, General Administration of Customs and State Taxation Administration Announcement No. 20 of 2026: lithium-ion batteries are subject to a 2% consumption tax from September 1, 2026, rising to 4% from September 1, 2027, with exports continuing to enjoy consumption tax refund/exemption, so it falls only on domestic sales. The trace in the statements is clear: single-quarter taxes and surcharges were 6.38 yi yuan in Q1, 6.87 yi yuan in Q2 and 22.14 yi yuan in Q3, with the share of revenue jumping from 0.46% to 1.34%. This money affects only the net margin — Q3 net margin attributable to parent was 12.86%, Q2 15.26%, and Q3 last year 17.80%.
On product mix, Q3 power plus energy storage sales totaled more than 260GWh, with energy storage about a quarter, per the exact words at the results briefing. But in the first-half by-product data, the energy storage battery system gross margin was 23.96%, 3.3 percentage points higher than the 20.63% of the power battery system. So the chain "energy storage share rose, therefore gross margin fell" cannot be derived from the available data. More defensible is that within energy storage the company is moving from selling cells and DC-side products to AC-side and system products — the board secretary himself said "the corresponding delivery and revenue recognition cycle has lengthened somewhat compared with before" — and that within power there is a downward shift in model mix. By-product gross margins will not be updated until the annual report; Q3 cannot verify this.
What about Q4. On the gross margin side, there is no new rebate policy in Q4, 6% runs through the end of the year, and consumption tax does not enter gross profit anyway, so the marginal pressure from taxes on gross margin does not increase further in Q4. The net margin still has two cuts: consumption tax was counted for only one month (September) in Q3, while Q4 is a full three months, so on a like-for-like basis this block is roughly three times Q3; and from January 1, 2027 the battery export tax rebate is cancelled outright, so cost in next year's Q1 must rise by another chunk equivalent to 6% of export revenue. Whether the gross margin keeps falling depends on product mix and price; the company gave only "a single quarter's product mix fluctuation does not represent the long-term direction" and "actively communicating with customers on sharing," and gave no gross margin guidance — any specific number is a guess.
