The desk answers已核实Walnut, from public filings
Hikvision Q3 report: what does the quarter-on-quarter change in single-quarter gross margin explain, and why
In one sentence: it shows that part of the good-looking high gross margin in the first half was "given by inventory accounting," not a sudden strengthening of operating capability.
The most noteworthy thing about this change is not that gross margin fell 1.62 points, but that it exposes an illusion in the cumulative data.
Half-year report cumulative gross margin 49.97%
Q3 report cumulative gross margin 49.63% down only 0.34 points
Q3 single-quarter gross margin 49.05% Q2 single quarter was 50.67%, down 1.62 points
The cumulative figure looks almost unchanged, while the single-quarter figure has already fallen 1.62 points. A fivefold difference in magnitude is hidden inside an "average."
Why does this happen. The company stocked up a lot of memory chips. Goods stocked before memory prices rose were cheap; this batch of cheap materials was made into products and sold in the first half, with revenue recognized at current prices and costs calculated at low prices, so gross margin was propped up. By Q3, the cheap materials were mostly used up, and the cost side switched to materials after the price increase. The company uses the moving average method for accounting, so costs rise quarter by quarter, and gross margin naturally moves down.
The company itself acknowledged this at its October 17 earnings briefing, with the original wording "the conversion of low-priced raw materials into revenue did indeed provide some help to the gross margin in the first half." This sentence is important—it is equivalent to saying that part of the 49.97% cumulative gross margin in the first half is unsustainable.
But this does not mean operations have deteriorated. In the same financial report:
Q3 revenue 27.222 billion yuan year-on-year +13.71% quarter-on-quarter +4.27% a new high for growth since this round of adjustment
Q3 net profit 5.016 billion yuan year-on-year +36.97% quarter-on-quarter -1.93%
Q3 excluding non-recurring items 4.984 billion yuan year-on-year +43.13% higher than Q2
First three quarters ROE 14.99%
Revenue is accelerating, growth excluding non-recurring items is hitting a new high, and on the expense side the three operating expenses in the first three quarters rose only 4.62%, with the expense ratio at 28.00%, the lowest for the same period in the past three years. Operating leverage is genuinely working.
So the correct reading is: this company is now pulling profit through "expenses not rising, gross profit amount rising," not through price increases. The quarter-on-quarter decline in gross margin is the normal cost of the inventory cycle; year-on-year it is still 3.38 points higher, and the level remains above the historical range.
What to be vigilant about is another matter. How long the memory price increase lasts determines how many more quarters this buffer of low-priced inventory can be used. After the buffer is used up and costs fully switch to high-priced materials, where gross margin will land—that is the company's true profitability. Q4 is the first observation point—whether it can hold 48%.
A reverse reminder: when you see a company's gross margin suddenly jump, the first thing you should ask is "did this come from a price increase, or from using cheap inventory." Hikvision has provided a standard case this time; the answer is the latter.
