The desk answersverifiedWalnut, from public filings
The premise of this statement does not hold: the 2026 annual report has not yet been released; under the rules, disclosure is required no later than April 30, 2027. The latest thing available now is the third-quarter report dated October 28, 2026 (announcement no. 2026-063). The two numbers in the annual report cannot be compared today. But both numbers are in the third-quarter report, and the direction is very clear: of the money for optical module makers' capacity expansion, what comes in first is contract liabilities; revenue is recognized only after customer acceptance, with inventory in between.
Money comes in first as advance receipts, then as revenue
The cash collection order in the equipment business is fixed. The customer places an order and pays a deposit, recorded as contract liabilities; the company prepares materials and starts production, recorded as inventory; only after the equipment is shipped to the customer's workshop and passes acceptance is it converted into revenue; the remaining balance is then recorded as accounts receivable. Contract liabilities mean "the money has arrived but the work is not finished"; revenue means "the money is recognized only after the work is done."
Robotechnik in 2026 followed exactly this order. Contract liabilities rose from 1.57 yi at the end of 2025 to 7.78 yi at the end of the third quarter, an increase of 6.20 yi in nine months, 4.9 times the prior year-end. Revenue over the same period was 10.01 yi, up 140.51% year-on-year. Both numbers are rising, but the pace does not match: contract liabilities rose by one step in each of the second and third quarters (+2.77 yi, +3.21 yi), while revenue was released only in the second quarter at 4.45 yi, then fell back to 3.93 yi in the third quarter, down 11.7% quarter-on-quarter.
| Item (yi CNY) | End of 2025 | 2026Q1 | 2026Q2 | 2026Q3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contract liabilities | 1.57 | 1.79 | 4.56 | 7.78 |
| Inventory | 4.10 | 4.67 | 5.25 | 7.58 |
| Accounts receivable | 6.74 | 5.94 | 7.07 | 8.90 |
| Single-quarter operating revenue | 5.33 | 1.64 | 4.45 | 3.93 |
| Contract liabilities/Inventory (x) | 0.38 | 0.38 | 0.87 | 1.03 |
The row in the table most worth looking at is the fifth. Contract liabilities divided by inventory rose from 0.38 to 1.03, meaning the advance receipts on the books can already cover all the input in work in progress and stocked materials. When an equipment maker reaches this stage, it shows customers are lining up with money, not that the company is advancing money and piling up goods itself.
So the answer to "where does it land first" is that it lands first in contract liabilities, with revenue one to two quarters later. But one thing should be added: not all money goes this way. At the end of the third quarter, accounts receivable were 8.90 yi, larger than contract liabilities, accounting for 89% of revenue in the first three quarters. This money is collected only after acceptance and never passed through contract liabilities. Whether it goes through advance receipts or credit sales depends on how it is negotiated with the customer; both paths exist at the same time.
The downstream money really is being spent
The money for capacity expansion has a source. The capital expenditure of optical module makers in the first three quarters of this year is not on the same scale as the previous two years. Same cash flow statement, same line item "cash paid for the purchase and construction of fixed assets, intangible assets and other long-term assets":
| Cash paid for the purchase and construction of fixed assets (yi CNY) | Full year 2025 | 2026Q1 | 2026Q2 | 2026Q3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zhongji Innolight | 27.60 | 19.29 | 28.73 | 43.59 |
| Eoptolink | 13.20 | 6.31 | 6.33 | 5.42 |
Zhongji Innolight's third-quarter report is very direct: prepayments rose from 1.34 yi at the beginning of the year to 15.67 yi, an increase of 1068.43%, because "orders on hand continued to increase; to meet order delivery, upstream raw materials were locked in with suppliers in advance, and prepayments for material procurement increased accordingly"; inventory rose from 126.81 yi to 238.77 yi, up 88.30%. Eoptolink's prepayments over the same period rose from 0.17 yi to 13.22 yi, and inventory rose 140.70%. Both paid first to lock materials and capacity.
Equipment accounts for only a slice of this money. Of Zhongji Innolight's 43.59 yi of capital expenditure in the third quarter alone, most is plant, power and land; equipment is only one part. Robotechnik's total revenue in the first three quarters was 10.01 yi, less than one-tenth of the two companies' combined capital expenditure of 109.67 yi. Treating its contract liabilities as a thermometer for optical module capacity expansion will lead to misreading.
Robotechnik's own revenue structure is also changing. In the first half of 2026, optoelectronics and semiconductor packaging and testing equipment was 4.88 yi, accounting for 80.2% of revenue, already exceeding the full-year 2025 figure of 4.39 yi; photovoltaic equipment was only 0.83 yi, accounting for 13.6%, versus 4.33 yi for the full year 2025. The increase in contract liabilities comes basically from the optoelectronics segment — this is inferred from the revenue structure; the quarterly report does not break down contract liabilities by product, and the company has never disclosed them.
Comparing with the annual report number will be low
This is a pitfall particularly easy to fall into with the 2026 annual report: year-end is the peak recognition period for equipment makers, and contract liabilities on that day will be pushed to the full-year low.
2025 is a ready example. Contract liabilities at the end of the third quarter were 2.38 yi, but only 1.57 yi at year-end, down 34%, because 5.33 yi of revenue was recognized in one go in the fourth quarter. If you really take the contract liabilities at the end of the 2026 annual report and divide by full-year revenue, it is equivalent to taking a snapshot on the day when full-year advance receipts are thinnest, and the ratio obtained will certainly be lower than the true order thickness.
To judge whether capacity expansion has really landed on the equipment side, more reliable than the full-year ratio is looking at three things at the same time: contract liabilities rising for two consecutive quarters, inventory rising in tandem (indicating real production), and accounts receivable growing slower than revenue (indicating revenue is not being propped up by credit sales). In the first three quarters of 2026, all three match — receivables increased 2.16 yi, revenue increased 5.85 yi, operating cash flow was 4.18 yi, up 646.20% year-on-year (0.56 yi in the same period last year).
The strongest counterargument cuts elsewhere: orders on hand declined quarter-on-quarter. The first question in the October 28 conference call was about this, and the company's exact words in the transcript were:
The overall trend of backlog orders is still in a process of continuous expansion, but the backlog amount disclosed on the periodic report date is a point-in-time figure; both the rolling delivery and revenue recognition of existing orders and the pace of new order placement will affect the data at a given point in time.
Translated, that means the point at period-end did indeed decline. Contract liabilities rising while backlog orders fall occurring at the same time indicates that an increase in the prepayment ratio may be propping up the numbers in place of order growth.
Another thorn is the prepayment ratio. Contract liabilities record only consideration already received or for which a right to receive already exists; the portion signed but not yet paid does not go into this account. So 7.78 yi is the lower bound of orders, not the orders themselves. If customers push down the prepayment ratio, contract liabilities will shrink immediately, while not a single order may be lost.
Under what circumstances I would be wrong
In the annual report of April 2027, if at year-end contract liabilities fall back below 3 yi and fourth-quarter single-quarter revenue also fails to reach 5 yi, then this wave of prepayments in 2026 was a one-off concentrated order placement, not continuous capacity expansion, and this judgment is void. Another: if in the fourth quarter inventory continues to rise while contract liabilities stop rising, it means stockpiling has become something the company bears itself, and then the conclusion that "customers are queuing up with money" must also be withdrawn.
