SAP's cloud growth is outrunning the margin it earns

SAP's Q3 2026 shows the cloud transition working on the top line and thinning at the gross-margin line. Cloud revenue rose 26% to €6,668m and current cloud backlog 28% to €24,144m, but the cost of delivering it rose 29.3% to €1,690m, so cloud gross margin fell 0.7pp to 73.9%.
The chain is mix, not pricing. Cloud is displacing software support — €2,434m, down 5%, a line with almost no delivery cost — and every added RISE or Business AI workload runs on hyperscaler compute SAP rents. SAP now guides support decline to "accelerate in the coming years." Operating margin still rose 1.1pp to 28.5%, but only because opex grew 9.3% against 13.1% revenue growth.
| Peer | Latest quarter | Revenue y/y | Backlog y/y |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft | Q1 FY27 | 19% | 73% |
| Oracle | Q1 FY27 | 30% | 46% |
| Salesforce | Q2 FY27 | 11% | 14% |
Backlog definitions differ — 12-month for Salesforce, total RPO for Microsoft and Oracle — so read direction, not level.
What would change my mind: Q4 2026, due late January 2027, with cloud gross margin back above 74.6%.
The strongest counter-argument: the support decline is self-inflicted and lifetime value per converted customer rises anyway; free cash flow of €1,718m, up 36%, is not a model losing economics. The bear's reply is that SAP guides backlog growth to decelerate while compute costs climb.
